The honey bee hives are all located within a six-mile radius of downtown Pittsburgh. The apiary is deliberately small with hives widely distributed instead of all concentrated in one place. A lesser number of hives reduces honey bees’ potential to outcompete and reduce forage availability for wild bees. Wild bees and other pollinators need to eat, too! CoNectar marks the next stage on Apoidea Apiary’s 20-year journey. Apoidea is a scientific name for the bee superfamily, which includes over 20,000 + species of bees. The name signifies our dedication to inclusiveness of all bee species, not simply the domesticated European honey bee (Apis mellifera).
